The Parish of St. Ann is known for its beauty, regarded as the garden parish, and the parish was the first place Christopher Columbus landed on the island of Jamaica. In the previous blog, we looked at the agents of a society, and those were religion, education, family, government, and health care. In every society, all these agents must be present so society can function effectively. Now in this week’s blog, we are going to take a look at other institutions in society that are found in St. Ann that are also vital for society.

First, we are going to be looking at what represents law enforcement in St. Ann. Now, in every society, there will be crime. Thus, the Police Station is the representative of law enforcement in the parish, which was established in 1893, and is responsible for apprehending suspects and investigating crimes and maintaining social peace. The main purpose of this organization is to serve and protect, which they are currently doing for citizens in St. Ann. The police station is located on Bravo Street in St. Ann’s Bay, and a photo of the police station is displayed down below (Jamaica Constabulary Force, 2021).

What Represents the Courts or Law in the Parish of St. Ann?

In St. Ann, the courthouse was built in 1860. The courthouse has the responsibility for administering and interpreting the law and applying it to court cases. Many criminals have been sentenced here, and the courthouse serves as a symbol of justice. In a courthouse, one can only be found guilty or not guilty based on the evidence presented against them. Many are afraid of this building because they know what the consequences will be. Below is a picture of the courthouse in St. Ann’s Bay at present (Parish Court, n.d.).

In every parish in Jamaica, there is a parish library that is located in the parish capital. So, in St. Ann, there is a parish library that is located on Tucker Ave in St. Ann's Bay. The library serves two purposes: to educate citizens or help with their homework, and also to educate citizens on the history of Jamaica. Because of Marcus Garvey’s many accomplishments, it is only fair that a room was designed to represent this noble, educated, and intelligent person who came from the Parish of St. Ann, there is also there is a statue of Garvey upon entering the library

In life, there are always emergencies such as fires. The Jamaica Fire Brigade in St. Ann and also in the other parishes are not just there to put out a fire but to rescue individuals or animals if trapped, and also these firefighters have training in first aid to help the public if help is needed. In an instance when my neighbor’s dog was trapped, she asked for help to save her dog, but I could not do anything, so I recommended her to the Fire Brigade in St. Ann’s Bay, and in a short period of time, they were there to save my neighbor’s dog. Moreover, this fire station is located on the same street as the police station, about 5 minutes from the police station. The address is 3 Bravo Street, St. Ann’s Bay.

Society has evolved from non-digital to digital where the sending of letters is no longer required as there are different ways we communicate with our family and friends. In St. Ann residents still use the post office to collect their monthly bills and packages, along with paying bills and collecting PATH beneficiaries that are given by the government of Jamaica to help families in rural communities.
